For a number of years Dr. Brian Iwata, a distinguished psychologist has been championing the work of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA).  His focus is on Functional Analysis (FA).  This has shaped the work of many Behavioural Specialist, educators and clinicians working with students and their families, especially in the field of special education.  This is the idea.  With a Functional Analysis, which is part of a Functional Behavioural Assessment, factors which reinforce problem behaviours are identified and efforts are made to modify the existing behaviour with rewards and punishment (operant conditioning).

In other words, this type of analysis seeks to obtain the function of a behaviour and what is or are the motivation behind the behaviour.  When the motivation is identified for the problem behaviour, a treatment is recommended for the individual to obtain the same experience/feeling/emotion/physical item etc, but using a more adaptive means to obtain the reward.
